It has come to our attention that Middleridge residents are receiving
notices from American Trash Services that their rates are going up.
The Board has been in touch with Brenda from American. Please be
assured Middleridge Civic Association members WILL NOT
be charged an increase, and our rate is still in affect until the end of
June 2010!
Brenda has informed the Customer Service Staff at American that any
Middleridge MCA member who calls in will be told to disregard the
letter.

2009 Middleridge Civic Association Scholarships Awarded.
The Middleridge Civic Association has
just awarded three one-year, nonrenewable, scholarships in the amount of $600
each to three graduating high school seniors. The scholarships are awarded on
the basis of scholastic achievement (30%), extracurricular activities and
achievements (30%), and a personal interview (40%).
Selecting the winners never gets easier when you
are comparing students with 4.0+ grade point averages; International
Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement candidates; who provide unselfish service
to others less fortunate than themselves, whether homeless or in orphanages;
or dedicated to tutoring young children.
For 2009, the Scholarship Committee, after much
deliberation, chose, in first-name alphabetical order,
(Click picture for a close-up)
Miss Caitlin Campbell who
will attend Gettysburg College, PA
Miss Gabrielle Biskaduros
who will attend the University of South Carolina
Miss Jessica Roffenbender
who will attend the University of William and Mary
The winners were presented a certificate of
achievement and publicly recognized at the Middleridge Civic Association
Spring Meeting on May 7, 2009.
As special recognition for their favorite
Guidance Counselor or instructor, a $50 honorarium will be presented to the
individual each winner identified as most influential in their educational
experience.
Due to limited funds for scholarships, we could
only select three applicants. For you who were not chosen, the Community
wishes you all the success in the world. We know you will do well.
Excerpts from May
General Membership Board Meeting
Representative Bulova gave an overview of 2009 issues in Virginia, and
then he entertained questions. We appreciate David taking the time to
come to our meeting.
Feed the Firefighters: Jessica reported that the last meal went very
well. Volunteer names are listed in the Newsletter.
Middleridge Matinee: The first movie night will be held at the
Fairfax Club Estate pool area on Saturday night, June 27. The movie chosen
by meeting attendees was Bolt. We plan to have popcorn and/or cotton
candy available.
Neighbor Helping Neighbor: Catie described a new committee that will
help neighbors in emergency situations, and a signup sheet was passed
around.
Neighborhood Night Out: The NNO will again be held the first Tuesday
in August. We thank Gretchen and David Bulova for all their work in past
NNOs, and we are grateful that Dean and Dana Mularoni will help to
coordinate this year’s event.
Trash Removal Rates
The formal rates for Middleridge trash removal expired this past summer.
The following rates were recently negotiated with AAA and American and are
effective from October 1, 2008 thru June 30, 2009.
AAA – $26
per month ($78 per Quarter) plus a fuel and environmental fee. During the
past year this fee has ranged from $6 to a little over $13 per quarter.
This rate is effective from October 1, 2008 thru June 30, 2009.
American
- $25.95 per month ($77.85 per Quarter) currently with NO fuel or
environmental fee.
If the
rate you are currently paying is more then the above rate, you need to
contact the company and state that you are a Middleridge resident and
would like to have the published rate for Middleridge. American’s
telephone number is 703-368-0500 and AAA’s number is 703-818-8222. The
rates will not be retroactive prior to October 1, 2008. Both companies
state that if the Fairfax County Landfill rates increase next July, there
could be a rate adjustment.

is complete.

Dumpster Day
Well it looked as thought the 1st Annual Middleridge Dumpster Day was
a huge success.
Mary and I stayed to the very end, and we can both assure you that
nothing else would've fit in that dumpster by the time 11:45 came
around. Only 1 person had to be turned away because they came too
late ... but wow it was great to see the community take advantage of
it.
We also had many compliments about it as well and folks hoped we would
do it again.
Finally, while the driver was nervous that the metal in the dumpster
might be turned away, I never received a phone call about them
rejecting it. He did note that next time we should have a separate
dumpster for metal goods and they will take it to Lewis Metal who is
right across the street from PDS. Apparently they will pay for metal
scraps and we could get some money for it.
We should discuss it at the next meeting. I took a few photos which
I've attached so we can use them on the web site and in the
newsletter.
Thanks for every bodies help for a successful Middleridge event.
