Trash Disposal Clarification (article written by Al Melanson - April 15, 2006)
There has been a misunderstanding with the AAA proposal for the coming year. The quoted rate of $24.99 is for new customers only. The sub-bullet under the rate quote refers to the rate for existing customers and states: “Residents paying less than the above rate will not be automatically increased except for increases allowable per this Agreement. New Residents to the community will be quoted the above new rate.” Therefore, the current rate of $20.99 per month ($62.97 per quarter) is the correct AAA rate. The AAA paragraph that refers to future increases still applies.
The following summarizes the differences between AAA and American Disposal:

Future Increases: These rates don’t include Disposal Increases from Fairfax County or annual CPI. Customer acknowledges and understands that disposal and fuel costs as well as compliance with applicable laws and regulations are a substantial part of the cost of the services AAA is providing hereunder and that all are beyond the control of AAA. Therefore, Customer agrees that AAA shall have the right, at any time, to increase, on a proportional basis.
American Disposal Monthly Rate $19.95 Quarterly Rate $59.85
Future Increases: There will be a landfill increase on July 1st up to, but not to exceed, $2 per home/per month. This offer is valid for 12 months. Trash Disposal (article written by Al Melanson - April 8, 2006)
The current rates for Trash Disposal with AAA and American Disposal Services will end on May 1. In order to preclude any surprises in the form of last minute notification in the mail, the MCA Board initiated discussions with both AAA and American Disposal Services.
The response from AAA was shocking. After an increase of $2.50 per month last year from $18.50 to $20.99, AAA plans to increase the Middleridge rate by $4.00 to $24.99 per month or $75.97 per quarter. The AAA proposal from last year indicated that we would be liable for an annual CPI increase of between 2 – 3 per cent and a modest Fairfax County Disposal increase. This new rate amounts to almost a 35 per cent increase in the past year. In addition, AAA also states in their current proposal that we will be liable for other rate increases during the coming year. The following is a quote from the AAA proposal:

The American proposal also was surprising but in a positive way. The American rate for the past year has been $22.10 per month ($60.30 per quarter). The rate American has proposed for the coming year is a reduction to $19.95 per month or $ 59.85 per quarter. The proposal comes with the caveat that we will be liable for a landfill increase on July 1st up to, but not to exceed, $2 per home/per month. If the maximum increase were to be applied it would make the American rate $21.95 per month ($65.85 per Quarter).
American’s service will include regular trash pickup on Tuesday and Friday, recycles on Tuesday and yard waste on Wednesday. The American service center’s telephone number is (703) 368-0500.
Based upon AAA’s past history of poor service support and recent unjustifiable cost increases, the MCA Board recommends using American Disposal Services as the Middleridge primary trash collection provider.
